beneath the stars

written spring 2003

i confess that i can't see
beyond this bliss surrounding me
this quiet night, this hopeful light
this secret smile that i can't hide

i don't understand what you do to me
i can't feel the ground, i feel so free
with dreaming eyes, let my love arise
chasing twilight sunrise into the night

how can this be real
can heaven be so free
how can you be real
how can this be me?

you are the fire that burns in me
you're my desire, you are my dreams
you still my mind, you leave me breathless
you spin my world around, you blow me away

how can this be real
can heaven be so free
how can you be real
how can this be me?

so come with me, we'll fly away
across the seas, in heaven's sway
where starlight comes to hold us one
painting midnight skies across the sun

and everything beneath the stars just fades away
and everything beneath the stars just fades away
and everything beneath the stars just fades away
and everything beneath the stars just fades away

how can this be real
can heaven be so free
how can this be real
how can this be real
how can this be you and me?

how can this be real?

about this song:
I was taking music theory at UCSC, and spending many hours a week in the piano rooms at the music center. I was supposed to be learning my scales, but I was going quietly mad, so I spent more—much more—than half of my time in there playing around, applying guitar knowledge and what I'd learned of theory to the keyboard, figuring out chords, and teaching myself some piano. During this time, this song was begun on guitar, but quickly shifted over to piano. It's a shameless love song, and one that I actually like... which, if you understand how cheesy this stuff almost always feels to me, is saying a lot.

It's a pretty song. Kinda sappy though. lol just kidding. Whit
