written winter 2004
there's a raccoon in our backyard
lying over on his head
pushing and pulling real hard
trying to stand up but i think he'll soon be dead
there's a raccoon dying in our yard
and i'm starting to feel kinda bad
and i'm trying not to laugh too hard
'cause I think it should make me feel sad
oh! dead raccoon
but wait he's not dead yet
oh dying raccoon
how much longer? place your bets
then i looked into his eyes
as he lifted up his head
and it made me realize
maybe he was better off dead
but suddenly what's this i see?
he's up and looking all around
came back to life miraculously
and now he's walking across the ground
oh! not dead raccoon
i guess i lost that bet
not dying raccoon
maybe i'll make him my pet
there's a raccoon leaving our yard
watch him, there he goes
and this goodbye sure is hard
when we'll meet again, god only knows
oh! not dead raccoon
i sure did lose that bet
not dying raccoon
maybe we'll meet again yet
maybe we'll meet again yet
maybe we'll meet again yet
maybe we'll meet again
maybe we'll meet again
maybe we'll meet again yet
someday
about this song:
I know a few people who've been waiting for me to put this one up here. I wrote this song together with Pastor Anthony, Josh Kagi, and Andrea Burton at one youth group planning meeting on a Tuesday afternoon a couple months ago. Rocky the Not Dead Raccoon has since become the undisputed mascot for this youth group. I would give you a little background to the story before you read, but there really is no need. The entire story is contained within the song. So I will simply say that we found a raccoon in the back yard of the youth house one day, and he looked like he was going to die. Here is the full story; it is completely true.
