I personally really think this song sucks. I'm almost ashamed to put it up. It was the first real song I ever wrote. Not really, but the true first one perished sometime long ago, and it's a good thing, because none of you are ever going to see it.
Written Winter 2000
To waste away so many years
Performing on somebody's stage
To live inside one giant test
To pass or fail, to make the grade
Victimized by expectations
Enemies of our own potential
Pushed and poked and put to the test
Chased through maze after lab-rat maze
To play the part for all it's worth
And hope the judges like your act
To cringe in shadows of mortal fear
Of those whose hands control your fate
To rot away in karmic prison
Trapped inside claustrophobic routine
Of vindictive tedium and painful boredom
Frustrating exercise in futility
So cut these strngs and end this show
Flunk their test, it doesn't matter
Refuse to play this endless game
Break out of here, it's yours to live
